interventions within the Public Space and the Internet

Folie/Culture joins the Montreal-based multidisciplinary art centre DARE-DARE to present the intervention Bloggers in Captivity ! The invited artists Adam Bergeron (Québec) andkaren elaine spencer (Montréal), have accepted the challenge of being shut up and alienated during the three-day event on the esplanade of the Saint-Laurent metro station.

Are we all alienated? Or, at least, are we all, individually, alienated from someone? Is our relationship with information technology both alienating and enriching? Are some forms of alienation more acceptable than others? If so, does this social acceptability make our alienation, which is sometimes voluntary and sometimes imposed, more comfortable? WithBloggers in Captivity Folie/Culture intends to take the pulse of a certain globalized and mediatised madness.

Two artists in residence, captives in an impermeable and completely transparent bubble, will take up the challenge of isolating themselves to better align with the world. Alienated from the immediate world, marinating in a glass cage, they will try to join their peers in making this appeal to the World Wide Web: Alienated from all countries, unite!

The practice of the established artist karen elaine spencer switches between the streets, gallery exhibitions, and dissemination on the Web. It questions the hierarchy that is inherent in our values and examines how, as ephemeral beings, we occupy the world. The work of the emerging artist Adam Bergeron is characterized by the use of noise and household waste and aims to question the idea of taste, style and normative distinction. Far from expressing an asocial desire to offer mental succor to the exhausted businessman, his art intends to pass on to the public the generalized anxiety symptomatic of a global economy in perpetual crisis with no foreseen way out…

Arkadi Lavoie Lachapelle Entitled I Love You the Way You Hate, this project reinterprets the slogan “I love myself the way I am”. Well-used in marketing campaigns targeting women to sell products and ideologies related to well-being, that sentence often brushes off the question “Who do I love?”.

Geneviève Amyot Fear, especially its confrontation, is at the heart of Geneviève Amyot’s work and most of all in "Nous sommes beaucoup qui avons peur", published posthumous in 20031 by Éditions du Noroît. In this text, the author reveals the valves of the fear – of her personal fears and our common fears – inviting us to a meeting with ourselves, without the possibility of escape, to confront the repressed fear that contains us all.
