Skeletons is presented as a series of sound frames, in which the movement of automatons is made audible through the use of ultrasonic sensors. Left uncovered, the mechanisms that constitute the heart of the objects become sound images. While they are in operation, the sensors capture the faint sounds they emit; these are added to the original melodies emanating from the objects. Discovering a form of "life" in inert objects through technique is a rigorous avenue explored by Ed Osborn. By seeking to extract "the sound spectrum of objects", he gives them a voice. Thus exposed, the machinations unmask the illusion: the mythical aura surrounding the musical box and the mechanical toy dissipates.

Born in 1964 in Helsinki (Finland), Ed Osborn works with many forms of electronic media including installation, video, sound, and performance. Osborn is known for his installations that integrate sculpture and sound. Osborn has also worked with video as an art form and done sound performances. His installation works use objects as diverse as train sets, rubber tubing, wind-up music boxes and fans to create a visual and sound environment.
