ZOOM IN

Photographic works are presented in public restrooms of bars and restaurants on advertising supports.

ZOOM IN revolves around the notions of truth and falsity, of private and public space. The photographic works are presented in public restrooms of bars and restaurants on advertising supports. To see the entire exhibition, the viewer must visit all the toilets, even those of the opposite sex. In 13 bars/restaurants in the city of Montreal.

This creation and dissemination project is a continuation of the work of Quebec-based artist-photographer Julie Marchand. The Zoom In exhibition revolves around notions of truth and falsity, of private and public space. In this instance, intimate spaces such as the bedroom and bathroom are used. The shots are taken with a telephoto lens (zoom) from outside the residence, creating a sense of voyeurism. The viewer unwittingly reproduces the artist's creative gesture. The thirty-two photographs were taken on the sly. However, the window frame, door frame, shadow or any other objects or characters entering the field of the shot are kept, increasing the sense of the forbidden. The works are exhibited in public toilets in bars and restaurants, on Zoom Media advertising stands. To see the exhibition in its entirety, viewers must visit all the toilets, even those of the opposite sex. As in previous projects, the artist surprises the viewer in an incongruous location far from conventional art venues.

This exhibition was made possible with the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Zoom Media.

Julie Marchand is an artist-photographer who lives and works in Quebec City.
