The Place de Galo works are temporary, portable and inflatable sculptures that provide an alternative to the public monument as a site for collective memories. Their qualities allow them to be transportable, enabling their users to carry the stories and sentiments normally offered by permanent monuments. The Portuguese Galo (Rooster) is a widely recognized symbol for ‘things’ Portuguese and for some; it is a symbol of good luck. Traditionally the Portuguese Galo is descriptive of a fable that provides virtues of hope, justice, and truth, respectable qualities worthy enough for any monument. My interest lies in the representation of this symbol, which has over time experienced a change in its meaning, and which has been transplanted outside of its place of origin.
Andrea Carvalho considers ideas of place and belonging through reworking the ornamental, and fragments of architecture. Her practice-based research focuses on notions of uprootedness, the home, and connections to place. Andrea lives and works in Montreal where she is currently working towards her MFA in Sculpture at Concordia University.
