Julie-Isabelle Laurin

Julie-Isabelle Laurin

Originally from Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal, Julie-Isabelle Laurin leaves traces of her passage on earth everywhere. She considers her material works as fragile artifacts that are vulnerable to the test of time. She questions the idea of monumentality by focusing on the stories preserved by her sculptural objects, giving them the importance of a life, of an era. Each artifact being fragmentary of her experience as a human, she prefers to put them in relation to one another and give herself the chance to tell them, letting herself be surprised by the jolts of her memory. Since 2020, she has been working in collaboration with Félipe Goulet-Letarte on a series of performances and interventions around the Monument à Maisonneuve in Place d'Armes. Through this project, an unsolvable questioning about monumental systemic racism and the place of the artist in the representation of history in the public space has emerged. She first collaborated with DARE-DARE in 2018 for the Performative Monument project and then participated in several events of the center (Femmes Frictions, Fabuler l'école, Les petites vites). She has been a member of the programming committee from roughly 2019-2021.
